We All Need to Be Better

As a global traveler, I’ve had the privilege of exploring places both iconic and off the beaten path. Time and again, I’m struck by the warmth and kindness of the people I meet along the way. But just as often, I’m stunned by the sheer disregard some others show.
Take today, for example.
While visiting a local historical attraction in Western Australia, we ran into a group who flat-out ignored the rules—climbing over fences, trampling off designated paths, all chasing that perfect “Insta” shot with zero respect for the site or those around them. These weren’t kids. These were grown adults acting like the rules didn’t apply to them. Why behave that way? Why act so entitled?

I’m all for having a good time—believe me, I’ll be the first to join in—but not when it comes at the cost of others’ experience or disrespects a place’s history and beauty.
It's Complicated
I did a quick check with some experts to understand if my ire with this behavior was justified and much to my amazement, there is a significant uptick in Tourist Bad Behavior around the globe. Lots of professionals are trying to understand what’s driving the trend and what to do about, however, according to many of them, the issue is complicated and multifaceted.
I’m certain that it’s complicated, however, I don’t believe that broadly, this kind of behavior is who we are as a people. I also don’t believe that these same people would act that way if they were in their hometown.
If you’ve traveled at all, I’m sure you’ve seen the same kind of thing. And no, this isn’t a “get off my lawn” moment. It’s just a reminder: we can—and should—do better.
